Dr. Jakobsson has worked as a testifying expert witness for more than ten years. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in a patent litigation cases, inter partes reviews, class action suits, and (as a technology expert) in criminal cases.
He has been involved in a variety of cases. In one large patent litigation case, Dr. Jakobsson was given a portfolio of approximately thirty security patents and asked to reverse-engineer a major social network provider to determine what patents they infringed. He produced charts for more than twenty of the patents, and the case settled within a few weeks. After yet another few weeks, Dr. Jakobsson was retained by the same law firm to represent another client of theirs in a second large case, involving a major computer, phone and tablet manufacturer. He has been retained by the same firm (Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan) several times after that.
Dr. Jakobsson represents both plaintiffs and defendants, and is closely familiar with IPRs and MTAs. (Example PTAB decision, with highlights, crediting his testimony.)
Dr. Jakobsson has testified and opined in cases involving a variety of security technologies, including spam protection, randomness, obfuscation, digital rights management, privacy technologies, electronic signatures, email security, honeypots, and anti-virus technology. He has represented clients in the U.S., Canada and the Philippines. His specialty is cases where complex and abstract technologies need to be explained in clear and understandable terms.
